Some of these settings you will be able to change after you have launched your Blog and published some of your amazing content, others you might not.
Additionally, we are going to talk about how you could structure your Blog and Menu and which Pages you should at least consider adding to your Website.

Important WP Settings before you go “Live” or “Launch” your Blog OR publish your first Post
1. Site Title and Tagline
Setting your Site Title and Tagline are two of the most important steps before you launch your Blog. The site “Tagline” explains in a few words what your Blog or Website is all about. Some Themes will display the “Tagline” in the header or in the sidebar.
As WordPress puts it: “Your site title can be anything you’d like; it doesn’t have to be the same as your blog’s URL or your username. You can use a cleaned-up version of your URL (e.g., myawesomeblog07 can become My Awesome Blog), or change it to whatever best reflects your site’s personality and topic. Note: No matter what you change your site’s title to, your address remains the same”. Read the full article HERE.

2. Static Page or Latest Posts
You can decide whether you want to display a static page when people first visit your Blog or if they immediately see your latest posts as your Front Page. This is one of the most important steps before you launch your Blog, period!
When you choose a static page your visitors will first see a Landing Page where you can give more information about what your Blog is about and who you are. Then you can select a Post Page as your Blog. You can interlink those two by adding a “BLOG” Section in your Home Menu.
I recommend using this method in order to give your reader all the information they need and a clear pathway.
To set this up, you first need to create two pages. Go to “Pages” in your WordPress Sidebar and create one page as your Front Page and a second Page which will contain your Blog posts. Note: Some themes already have created those Pages for you so keep an eye out for them.
Once you have your Pages:
Go to Settings > Reading
- Your “Lates” Post
- A “Static” Page
- If you choose “Static” page select the pages we created in the latest step and choose your “Front” and “Post” page.
- Now you can define how many posts you want to display per page Blog page in the next section eg. 10 Blog posts per page.
- Define whether you want to show only an excerpt summary of your posts on your Page or the full Blog post.
3. Choosing your Permalink Structure
One most important steps before you launch your Blog is to set your preferred “Permalink” structure.
“Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual pages and blog posts, as well as your category and tag archives. A permalink is the web address used to link to your content. The URL to each post should be permanent, and never change — hence the name permalink.” Read more what WordPress says HERE.
Now you can choose how exactly this link structure should look like. It is set to default to include the day the post or section was published and the name of the post.
I recommend using post name alone as permalinks as your URL will look much nicer and cleaner.
IMPORTANT: Once you have launched your Blog and published your post – Please DO NOT change the Permalink structure of your Website. As URLs are the specific addresses where people can find your Blog and Posts, once you change this here, people won’t be able to find your content with the old URL. I would recommend sticking to your old structure even though it might not look as nice.
Here is how to set this up:
Settings > Permalinks > Choose Post Name as URL Structure
The new Data Privacy Law (GDPR) but also others, require you to explain how the data of people visiting your Blog is used, saved and secured by your Website and by you. This is for sure one of the most important steps before you launch your Blog and a topic you won’t be able to surpass if you want to create a money making and successful Blog.
Go to Settings > Privacy
5. Site Icons
You may have noticed that some Blogs have this little icon once you open a new Tab in your Internet Explorer. This little “Site Icon” is great to brand your Blog but also to give your Blog a professional vibe.
First, you will need to create your Site Icon for example in CANVA. Use the 512 x 512 pixels or more to have it displayed properly.
I recommend using something similar than your Blog Logo for your Site Icon or something which makes it easy to remember for your audience. To set this up:
Go to Appearance > Customize > Site Identity > upload your Site Icon
6. Install Yoast SEO Plugin
Another one of the most important Steps before you Launch your Blog is to install the Yoast SEO Plugin. The Yoast SEO Plugins is one of the handiest and important Plugins you ever need for your Blog. There are a ton of helpful functions you will need later on in the process of blogging but for now, we want to focus on installing the Plugin if you haven’t yet and setting the (-) sign to separate the letters within your Blog URL. This will be important for your SEO once your Blog is more established. To install the Plugin:
Go to Plugins > Add NEW > YOAST SEO > INSTALL > ACTIVATE
Now head over to the new SEO section within your WordPress Dashboard Sidebar.
Go to SEO > Search Appearance > General > make sure you are using this sign (-) the first separator to separate words in your URL
7. Difference Between a Menu, Posts, Pages, Categories + Links
There are many reasons why I suggest you start creating a clear and easy navigation on your Blog right from the start. These are a few important steps before you launch your Blog but once you have set this up right you are good to go.
First of all, it will make matters for your visitors so much easier when they are searching for something on your Website. Second of all Google uses your navigation to create a web of information on how your content is connected to each other. The better and easier this is for Google, the easier you will have it with SEO and the more successful you will be with your organic traffic.
So this is just a suggestion of how your general and Blog Menus could look like and what important Pages I would include on your Blog.
