Do you want to “Start a Mom Blog in 2020” but you think it is too late and there is no chance you are going to compete with other mom bloggers who have been around for years? Personally, I believe you should think again.
Blogging and especially mom blogging is personal. It’s a topic which is and will remain relevant and you can bring your own wisdom and personality to it. Women still love to read blogs and there is no better time to start blogging than in 2020!
In this beginner’s guide, I will teach you how to start a mom blog in 2020 without a hustle. Setting up a blog can take no more than 7 min, but there will be a steep learning curve after. However, I know that you can do and I will be there to help you every step of the way!
Before we can get to the fun stuff though, we quickly need to set up your blog from a technical side. But don’t worry it’s super easy so let’s start it together right now! Here are two of my favorite Mom Blogs you can look at for more motivation:
How to Start a Mom Blog in 2020 (Hosing + Setup)
To start a Mom Blog in 2020, you need two things, to begin with:
1. Blog Hosting
Your blog hosting is where your website is stored and managed on the internet. For this, you will need the help of a third-party service. My personal recommendation is SiteGround. You can start a WordPress Blog at SiteGround for no less than $3.95/month.
This will include your hosting as well as your WordPress blog. Yes, it’s that easy and it will literally take you less than a couple of minutes to finish this process. So, get your hosting with SiteGround here to continue.
2. Blog Domain
Your domain is basically your blog name a.k.a your domain name a.k.a your URL. In order for people to find you on the internet, we need to secure your blog name. The great thing is, that if you don’t have a domain name yet you can get it together with your hosting directly at Siteground.
Just start by pressing get hosting here and select “Register a Domain” to secure your blog name. Get your domain name with Siteground here to finish setting up your blog.

Mom Blog friendly Themes
Now that you have successfully set up your hosting, domain and WordPress Blog the fun begins. The first thing you need is a Blog Theme. This will give your blog the basic structure and look.
After choosing a theme you will still be able to change fonts and colors and a lot of other settings but a theme is a template that helps you achieve a certain look without having to know code. Really cool right?
So WordPress has many many free themes you can use to start out. Once you are logged into WordPress just head over to “Appearance” in the left menu and choose “Themes”. Here you can scroll through all the free themes which WordPress offers.
You can also upload your own theme. Now personally, I am using paid themes because I think they are more beautifully designed and optimized for mobile use as an example. But it’s not a must.
Check out BluChic Themes which are my personal favorite themes for feminine and mom blog designs here. They are beautiful, easy to install and set up and I love their customer service if you have any questions.

Setting your 3 Main Content Categories
Wow, our new Mom Blog is almost live. This is super exciting stuff! Now we can really start to think about what our blog should cover and how you can best help other moms along their journey.
To start out, I would recommend setting up three main categories. Within those categories, you will be able to create individual blog posts to help your audience. Here is an example.
- Tips for New Moms
- Breastfeeding Tips
In WordPress head over to “Posts” > “Categories” to create and name your new main categories. You can later add your categories to your menu, so your audience will have no problem finding the most relevant content on your blog.
I would not recommend creating too many categories as it will get too confusing for you and your audience. Leave something out (you can always create more categories later), rather than feeling overwhelmed from the start.
Now, really hone in on what you want to write about in the individual posts belonging to your category.
We have made it to the fun part in our “How to Start a Mom Blog in 2020” Guide – creating content! There are a couple of tips I would like you to consider when creating content:
Tip 1: The best topics to write about
People want you to solve their problems. Specifically in mom blog terms, problems or helpful ideas about mom and pregnancy life. Here is a list of content starting lines which work really well:
- How to’s
- Lists (The 10 Best …)
- My best Tips for new Moms (1st Baby)
- How to calm down your baby when you are sleep deprived and tired
- How to use a Breast Pump
- The 10 best baby buggies
Tip 2: Be helpful
A mistake which new bloggers often make is to think that a blog is a place to write about their personal life. Sadly, and I am sure your life is very interesting, this is not why people visit your blog or surf the internet though.
However, people do want to hear how you handle a specific problem they might be having right now and how you solved it in your life. Maybe you already have three kids and have many amazing tips for the first-time mom. Always remember to be helpful and to provide tips rather than only telling your side of the story. Use storytelling as a tool to convince your audience that your insight will help them.
Tip 3: Consistency over quantity
Overwhelm is simply the biggest reason why people stop blogging altogether. I know that there is a lot of confusing information about how often you should blog and how many blog posts you need to attract a bunch of traffic but keep in mind that blogging also has to be fun and you need to be able to squeeze it into your calendar without burning out.
I recommend creating one blog post per week. If you can’t I would rather you stick to creating only two blog posts a month than creating 5 posts in a row and than ghosting your audience for the next weeks.
Consistency is incredibly important when it comes to blogging so don’t overwhelm yourself. Do what you can and be realistic about what you can achieve. If you find the time to write two blogs in a row schedule them out over the next two weeks rather than publishing them immediately. Be consistent.

Once you have launched your blog and started creating your mom blog posts, we need to talk about traffic. If no one is reading your blog then you will start to feel frustrated and want to quit in no time. So, there are two main traffic sources to your blog (there are more but let’s focus on those two first):
If you are just starting out and your blog is brand new, I don’t want you to focus on Google. I know you might be a bit confused right now but hear me out on this. With the exception of people who already have created a bunch of blogs and have a ton of experience, I don’t want you to focus on Google for now.
The reason is that brand new sites first have to create some content over time in order for Google to learn more about them. It is super hard to appear on Google search if you are a brand new Blog. Leave it for now (first 6 months) and focus on Pinterest instead.
Pinterest is the best source of traffic for new blogs. Yes, the platform is a super-secret weapon every blogger should use when starting out to build up traffic and an audience.
Now, Pinterest is my secret superpower and there is a lot to it but I know you can do it. I have a full category of free posts to learn all about Pinterest here on the blog. Start building up your Pinterest profile which will generate unlimited traffic to your blog. I also recommend you to read through those posts first, starting with my “Ultimate Pinterest Guide A-Z”.
