Three years ago, I quit my job at “corporate Switzerland” and moved across continents with now-husband Thomas. This was when my life as a blogger and entrepreneur kicked off. But there is so much more before that, in between, and now I want to share with you.

Now for those of you who would love to get to know me a bit better, I invite you to read on, so we can get to know each other a bit better!

When I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with cancer.

This is the first time I am sharing this online, and it feels scary.

But this is not a sad story; it’s just the story of my life. It is how I got to the place I am right now, and it’s a happy place!

So after being diagnosed with cancer, going through chemotherapy, radiation treatment, losing all of my hair, and feeling seriously miserable…

(Anyone having cancer treatment knows what I am talking about. You basically feel totally fine one day and once taking medicine you are the sickest person on planet earth)

…I got better.

After nearly a year of treatment, I fully recovered and have been cancer-free for the past 19 years!

Can I hear an amen!

But, I think the experience put me up for an interesting start to life… I went back to school, and everything was back to normal. So it seemed, and so I thought.

A couple of years later, I was about to start university but I was seriously lost. Zero ideas what I wanted in life, study, or who I was. So teenage Katie started studying economy because keeping all my options open seemed like the only rational choice. With a degree in business, I could enter any industry later on, right?!

(And disclaimer: I am really thankful for the privilege of being born in Switzerland. I understand that not everyone has the opportunity to receive an education, and I will appreciate it for the rest of my life.)

However, studying was not my thing, and I was miserable.

So as a hobby, I started a blog. It was this blog 🙂 It looked very different, I posted a lot about food and just random stuff, well how blogging was in 2010, very casual, I suppose…

Jump ahead five and something years, and I graduated. Btw still absolutely no clue what the heck I wanted in life!

The only good news was, though, I was gradually becoming a more confident person! Thank you mid to late twenties!

(Ps. I just started my 30th year on planet earth and have never been better! So for anyone reading this under 20 or early 20ies – life gets so much better, I promise – just pull thorough! Life will always be challenging, but at least you are not constantly worrying about what other people think of you.)

And it was also the first time I started to come to terms with how unhappy I was. But time wasn’t right yet. Or I wasn’t.

Because of all the self-doubt, I had convinced myself I had to get a job in corporate Switzerland and make a ton of money.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not advocating not to get a job, especially after going to school for years and years and not knowing what else to do.

Heck, yes, you should get a job and build a life of your own.

I just believe that building a life around a corporate job or any other situation, making you miserable from the start, is the wrong foundation for your life.

So I did it anyway and got a very good job at a prestigious Swiss Bank.

Hellooooo….! Yes, this is a dream job for a lot of people. So I grabbed my supposed jackpot by the neck and jumped in. I did it for more than 1.5 years, and I believe I did it well. But come on, I was just not happy.

Can you imagine me during that time? The constant doubt and negative self-talk.

Why are you so unhappy all the time?
You are good at this. Why isn’t this working?
You are so ungrateful!
What is wrong with you!!!!!
You are a quitter and a whiner!

So how did I end up leaving all that negative sh** talk behind, taking action and life into my own hands, quitting my job and moving across the continent?

Well, I believe it has something to do with being diagnosed with cancer as an 11-year-old.

Life is short.

And girl, you only live once!

My unintended run-in with cancer has made this abundantly clear.

Now I honestly believe you don’t have to be sick or have a traumatic experience to take control of your life.

I also don’t believe you have to wait as long as I did to figure out your stuff, but…

I believe it takes courage! I, for sure, know it takes some self-reflection and an honest look in the mirror.
